Frequently Asked Questions
Botox
How does Botox work to treat and prevent the formation of wrinkles?
Botox targets one of the underlying causes of frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines — the repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, smiling and raising the eyebrows over the years. Your specialist will inject these muscles with Botox to temporarily reduce muscle activity. You will begin to notice your frown lines between your brows, your crow’s feet lines and your forehead lines temporarily look better.
How much research has gone into Botox procedures?
When you choose Botox you can trust in its established track record. Backed by over 20 years of published studies, Botox is the most widely researched and studied treatment of its kind, approved for use in 98 countries. The safety and efficacy of Botox have been described in more than 528 peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals.
Will my face look overdone or unnatural?
Botox is a technique-sensitive treatment. You can trust Botox to deliver natural-looking results** when you are treated by someone who is licensed, trained, and a medical expert in facial anatomy. So you’ll look like yourself—only with less noticeable lines. No one should be able to tell you’ve had anything done.
Is Botox only for women?
The number of men choosing treatments like Botox has risen fast – in the past three years alone, men have received over one million botulinum toxin treatments. When surveyed, the majority of men say they want to look good and they're bothered by the changes they see in the mirror. 80% would choose to treat their crow's feet first, while 74% would prioritize their forehead lines, and 60% would most like to treat their frown lines.
How Long does the treatment take and will it hurt?
Your specialist will discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial analysis to determine the appropriate treatment areas for you. If the HCP deems you to be an appropriate candidate, the injection may take place on that same day. Some patients report that being injected with Botox feels like a pinch. Your specialist may use ice to numb the treatment area. Or, if you are concerned about discomfort, your specialist may apply a topical numbing cream before administering your treatment. Treatment requires minimal downtime. So you can return to your daily routine immediately after you leave your specialist’s office.
When will I see results after treatment? How long does Botox last?
You may begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours, with full results in 30 days, with results lasting up to four months for moderate to severe frown lines. Remember that results vary from patient to patient though, so your physician will plan your next appointment based on your results and aesthetic goals.
What were side effects of Botox seen in clinical studies?
Three percent of patients experienced eyelid drooping in the frown lines studies, one percent of patients experienced eyelid swelling in the crow's feet studies, and one percent of patients experienced brow drooping in the forehead lines studies. Other possible side effects include: dry mouth; discomfort or pain at the injection site; tiredness; headache; neck pain; eye problems: double vision, blurred vision, decreased eyesight and dry eyes; and allergic reactions. These are not all of the possible serious side effects of Botox please see the Important Safety Information including Boxed Warning and Medication Guide and talk to your specialist.
Dermal Fillers
How safe are filler treatments?
This is one of the safest cosmetic treatments available. For years, dermatologists have been refining the use of fillers to diminish signs of aging. Today, dermatologists safely treat people of many ages and all skin colors.
How long will dermal fillers like Juvaderm last?
In most cases dermal fillers will last 4-6 months but this effectiveness period will depend on skin type the area treated and the speed with which the body metabolizes the filler material. Some dermal fillers will last up to 12 months. Your Activ Aesthetics clinician will outline expectations for ‘touch up’ after the first treatment but expect 1-2 touch ups per year.
How long do dermal fillers take to work?
Unlike Botox, the effects of fillers are visible almost immediately but best results are often experienced 2-3 days later after the treatments have ‘settled’ into their final condition and form. Patients will be able to realize the most significant changes almost instantly and feel great after the numbing agent has worn off.
What do dermal filler treatments feel like? Are dermal fillers painful?
A topical skin anesthetic is applied shortly before the treatment begins to provide localized numbing and ensure comfort during the course of injections. The series of injections are painless but some patients may feel a slight stinging or burning sensation as the filler is injected. For lip augmentation injections, submucasol infilfiltrations of lidocaine are often used. Mild bruising, swelling or puffiness may be experienced immediately after the procedure. This will dissipate quickly as will any mild discomfort from the procedure.
What are the restrictions for dermal filler procedures?
Those who use anti-inflammatory drugs. Ibuprofen and Aspirin should be avoided for 1 week before and 2 days after as these can cause bleeding or increased bruising at the injection site. Do not use Dermal Fillers if you are pregnant or breast feeding because these products have not been tested for safety in pregnancy or nursing.
What are the side effects of dermal fillers?
Swelling/Bruising. In most cases swelling and bruising is minimal but some patients do experience swelling, redness, pain, itching, discoloration and that can last up to 72 hours after the procedure. This is more common for lip augmentations. Cold Sores. Dermal fillers may trigger an outbreak for treatments around the mouth if you’ve previously had cold sores.
Microneedling
What are the benefits of microneedling?
Microneedling involves the use of very fine needles that create tiny punctures in the top layer of the skin. This causes the body to begin stimulating new collagen and elastin, both key elements in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Patients can also see improvements in overall skin texture. Microneedling for stretch marks and acne scars is a very common practice among patients. A private consultation with our experienced clinician will give you a better idea of what microneedling can do for you.
What does the procedure involve?
Whether you choose microneedling for acne scars or other skin issues, you will notice that the skin appears bright and red following your session. For this reason, we do not recommend planning any significant events right after your appointment. Downtime varies from person to person, but generally, you may experience mild redness and mild swelling for about 24 hours after your microneedling treatment. We recommend 3 treatments spaced 1 month apart to see visible improvements, as the body requires time to produce new collagen and elastin. Results will continue to improve for a few months as the collagen remodels. Ask your clinician about planning maintenance treatments, scheduled every 4 – 6 weeks for the most optimal results.
What should I avoid after my microneedling procedure?
To ensure proper healing, we encourage patients to observe the following instructions for at least 24 hours after treatment:
-
Avoid direct sunlight and exposure to harmful UV rays.
-
Do not go swimming or immerse your face in water.
-
Avoid strenuous exercise or any activities that promote sweating.
-
Do not apply make-up or lotions.
Am I a candidate for microneedling?
Patients of any skin type are candidates for treatment as long as you do not have any active infections or lesions. Candidates should be prepared to wait 1 – 2 months after the initial four treatments before seeing results, since it takes time for new collagen and elastin to produce a noticeable difference in your skin. While microneedling treatment is safe and effective, it is not recommended for pregnant women or individuals using certain acne medications.
